Book Reviews: Devotionals from 2020
If you are like me, you may be already thinking about the New Year. New beginnings. Fresh starts.
You may be thinking about starting or restarting a daily devotional time with God. Personally, I love to dig deep into God’s word and really marinate in it. But practically, I can’t always do that. That’s why I’m thankful for quality devotionals that lead me to a scripture and give me something to think on during a busy day or busy season.
Here are a few devotionals that I’ve had my hands on recently.
A Prairie Devotional; Inspired by the Beloved TV Series
This devotional, written by Wendi Lou Lee who played Baby Grace on Little House on the Prairie, is perfect for girls of any age (including grown ups). Wendi shares a snippet or lesson from different episodes and how God has used those lessons to grow her faith. A verse and a thought provoking question end each short devotion. Practical and sweet. Perfect.
I especially appreciate how this devotion stretches the wholesome benefits of the TV show. My kids love LHOP so they are very open to discussing discipleship principles that we can learn from the show. For example, one of Wendi’s devotions focused on the Nasty Nellies in our lives. She pointed out how Nellie Oleson changed when she fell in love and was loved in return and that we can all be changed in a similar way when we learn how much God loves us. That sparked a very interesting conversation with my kids about how God designed us to be in relationship with others.
If you have young children, you may also appreciate Wendi’s FREE downloadable bookmark of the best chapters to read with children. Just sign up for her newsletter.
The Anne of Green Gables Devotional: A Chapter by Chapter Companion for Kindred Spirits
This devotional, written by Rachel Dodge, is different from her Jane Austen devotional which I LOVED. This one is chapter by chapter. What a great idea. Rachel also has a FREE mini-devo guide for young girls … 40 devotions with beautiful color drawings. Each includes a verse and prayer for the day. For all Anne lovers, young and old, this devotional is a must.
I haven’t read this book yet. It’s next on the list.
Everyday Joy Volume 2: 100 Daily Devotions
Beyond the beautiful cover you’ll find beautiful words. This is a collection of devotions from the Joyful Life Devotion Writing Team. They touch on a few universal topics like motherhood, marriage, spiritual growth, grief, and identity. Bonus: You’ll find two devotions written by me. This devotional would make a lovely gift.
